Hiermee is het startschot gegeven om van het museum een hedendaagse en uitnodigende plek in de binnenstad te maken waar de collecties op een moderne en educatieve manier worden gepresenteerd.<\/strong> <strong>De noodzaak tot vernieuwing wordt niet alleen erkend in het coalitieakkoord maar nu ook door de gemeenteraad. Er ligt al een masterplan waarin de contouren van de verdere ontwikkeling en het toekomst fit maken van het museum zijn geschetst. Directeur Wim Hupperetz is blij met het besluit van de raad: \u201cMet dit breed gedragen besluit kunnen we het Natuurhistorisch Museum op een noodzakelijke en duurzame manier door laten groeien als enige echte familiemuseum in Maastricht.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vernieuwingsplan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Het vernieuwingsplan bestaat uit verduurzaming\u00a0van het Rijksmonument waarin het museum aan het De Bosquetplein gevestigd is, een verbouwing om bestaande volumes beter te gebruiken, te ontsluiten en publieksfaciliteiten te verbeteren, vernieuwing\u00a0van de museale presentatie en verbinding\u00a0met lokale, regionale en landelijke partners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Een levend verleden <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Het verhaal over de iconische Mosasaurus en het (nog te weinig bekende feit) dat het belangrijke geologische tijdperk net voor het verdwijnen van de dinosaurussen e\u0301n de Mosasaurus naar onze stad vernoemd is (het Maastrichtien), draagt bij aan de identiteit van de Maastrichtenaren, hun trots en hun verbondenheid met de stad. En dat over generaties heen. Via de voorgestelde moderniserings- en verduurzamingsimpuls blijft het Natuurhistorisch Museum ook in de toekomst de belangrijke functie op het gebied van kennisoverdracht en het borgen van natuurhistorisch erfgoed vervullen. Op deze manier wordt de natuurhistorie van Maastricht op een eigentijdse manier in een sociaal- maatschappelijke context geplaatst met betekenis ervan op actuele thema\u2019s zoals klimaatverandering en de energietransitie. De ambitie die hierbij hoort is het bezoekersaantal van nu met ruim 30.000 extra bezoekers substantieel op te hogen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Groeiende belangstelling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Met het openen van de nieuwe tentoonstelling \u2018Ontmoet B\u00e8r &#8211;\u00a0 Mosasaurus Experience\u2019 waarin de mosasaurussen centraal staan en er zelfs een 11 meter lang skelet getoond wordt van de beroemdste mosasauri\u00ebr B\u00e8r, genereert het museum nu reeds meer bezoekers. Ook de toekenning van een ster in de Travel &amp; Culture Guide van Michelin vertaalt zich in een toenemende belangstelling voor het museum. Gisteren stond de teller op bijna 400 bezoekers.
