Ik heb veel groeves en vindplaatsen bezocht in Europa, maar je kunt juist in Zuid-Limburg vaak prachtige dingen vinden. We zoeken de varens en boomstammen uit het Carboon, de steenkoolperiode en de fossielen uit het Maasgrind. En natuurlijk de flora en fauna uit de subtropische Krijtzee van 66 miljoen jaar geleden (koralen, ammonieten, belemnieten, zee-egels en schelpen).<br \/>\nIn die zee zwom ook de Mosasaurus, het zeemonster waar het Natuurhistorisch Museum bekend om is. En ik ben de geluksvogel die mosasaurusbotten uit de mergel mag halen. Samen met andere vrijwillige preparateurs heb ik o.a. de Mosasaurussen Carlo en Lars onder handen gehad.<br \/>\nWat mijn werk in het museum nog leuker maakt is het contact met de bezoekers. Ik heb in het onderwijs gewerkt en combineer dus mijn hobby met mijn vak: zeer afwisselend!<br \/>\nDe meeste mensen die ons museum bezoeken zijn zeer ge\u00efnteresseerd in de voorgeschiedenis van de aarde en sommigen weten er best al veel van. Met name kinderen stellen goede vragen en zijn erg blij als ik ze een stukje vuursteen geef dat dicht bij de Mosasaurusbotten heeft gezeten.<\/p>\n<p>En soms moet je echt bij het begin beginnen. De gekste vraag die ik kreeg ging over de naam van de Mosasaurus. Die betekent \u2018maashagedis\u2019 en de vraag was of dat betekende dat mosasaurussen ooit in de Maas hadden gezwommen.
