In 1895 beschreef de Duitse paleontoloog Friedrich Vogel (geboren in 1860), als assistent van Professor K. Martin in Leiden, tweekleppige weekdieren (bivalven) uit het Limburgse Krijt die in de Leidse verzamelingen waren ondergebracht (Vogel, 1895). Daarbij onderscheidde hij een aantal nieuwe soorten, waarvoor hij namen invoerde.<\/p>\n

Het zijn precies die soorten die nu onze aandacht hebben. Samen met Marijn Roosen (Het Natuurhistorisch, Rotterdam) heeft onze paleontoloog dr. John Jagt 15 mei jl. twintig grote kartonnen dozen met fossielen doorgespit. Zo goed als alle type-exemplaren van Vogels nieuwe soorten zijn herkend \u2013 dat is dus goed nieuws!<\/p>\n

Op basis daarvan kunnen we nu ons eigen materiaal uit de voormalige groeves Curfs (Geulhem), Blom (Berg en Terblijt) en ENCI (Maastricht) op waarde schatten. Het voordeel van de door ons verzamelde exemplaren is dat we precies weten uit welke laag ze stammen; dat is in historische collecties heel vaak een groot probleem, zoals Leloux (2002) al had opgemerkt. Gelukkig zit er nog veel gesteente (matrix) vast aan de soorten die Vogel beschreef \u2013 aan de hand daarvan kunnen we nu een goede inschatting maken uit welke laag ze destijds zijn verzameld. Daarbij is het opvallend te zien hoeveel stukken \u2013 en dat geldt voor alle met het label \u2018Kaberg\u2019 (= Caberg in het noordwesten van de gemeente Maastricht) voorziene exemplaren \u2013 niet van Krijtouderdom zijn, maar jonger. Die moeten uit het onder-Danien stammen, en dus ook voorkomen in de Kalksteen van Geulhem in de buurt van Geulhem. Dat is iets wat we moeten gaan uitzoeken.<\/p>\n

De bedoeling is dat hele \u2018collectie Vogel\u2019 wordt gereviseerd en dat hierover een artikel gaat verschijnen. Op geregelde tijden zullen we hierover berichten.<\/p>\n
