Het komt misschien een beetje als een verrassing, maar naast mosasauri\u00ebrs, plesiosauri\u00ebrs, schildpadden en haaien kwamen er ook krokodillen voor (zij het mondjesmaat) in de warme zee die onze contreien een slordige 67 miljoen jaar geleden overspoelde. Veel bewijslast is er niet \u2013 een handjevol botten en een paar verbeende huidplaten. En toch … die tonen aan dat er van meer dan \u00e9\u00e9n soort sprake geweest moet zijn. De eerste melding, gebaseerd op los wervelmateriaal uit de collectie van Leendert de Heer (destijds nog in Museum Natura Docet, Denekamp), werd gedaan door onze honorair conservator, dr. Eric Mulder (Mulder, 1997). Hij toonde aan dat hier sprake was van een bepaalde familie van krokodillen die wel wat weg hadden van gavialen \u2013 Thoracosauridae. Soorten uit die familie zijn bekend uit het Laat-Krijt, maar ook uit het vroeg-Paleoceen, zoals losse tanden uit de buurt van Geulhem en Vroenhoven aantonen (Jagt et al<\/em>., 2013a, b).<\/p>\n

Inmiddels is de collectie De Heer in Maastricht ondergebracht en krijgt ze hernieuwde aandacht \u2013 heel terecht, want er zitten nogal wat eye openers<\/em> in. De Heer toog elk jaar naar Zuid-Limburg, waar hij diverse groeves bezocht en fossielen opkocht van groevearbeiders. Met name de oude groeves Nekami (\u2019t Rooth, Bemelen) en Curfs (Geulhem) waren favoriet. In de Nekami werd de afgegraven mergel via een transportband en een zeeftafel klaargemaakt voor transport. Op die band en tafel kwamen prachtige fossielen tevoorschijn \u2013 die leverden de arbeiders een aardig zakcentje op.<\/p>\n

Het door Mulder et al<\/em>. (2016) beschreven materiaal omvat een los opperarmbeen en een dijbeen (beide niet compleet) en twee benen huidplaten (osteodermen). Hoewel dit te weinig is voor een waterdichte soortbepaling is wel duidelijk geworden dat het hierbij gaat om Neosuchia, oftewel nieuwe krokodillen. Dat is de groep die alle nu levende soorten, plus hun fossiele voorlopers, omvat. Jammer genoeg blijven krokodillen zeldzaam in de Maastrichtse kalkstenen \u2013 de laatste 25 jaar is er geen enkele nieuwe vondst bijgekomen!<\/p>\n
