Graag kom ik even op dit thema terug, maar uit een totaal andere invalshoek. Ooit gehoord dat er ook een \u2018paleo-Barbie\u2019 bestaat? Echt waar&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Dat brengt me meteen op het thema \u2018Meiden en paleontologie\u2019, of liever \u2018Meiden in de paleontologie\u2019. Er is gelukkig een zekere traditie op dit gebied, zoals een artikel uit 2010 (Turner et al., 2010*) uit de doeken doet, en dat dan heel vaak op het terrein van fossiele gewervelde dieren, of vertebraten. Mary Anning (1799-1847) mag wel als pionier gelden &#8211; slim, daadkrachtig en niet makkelijk met een kluitje in het riet te sturen&#8230; De Engelse vertebratenpaleontologie heeft enorm veel aan haar te danken. Het hierboven aangehaalde artikel haalt meerdere voorbeelden aan van vrouwen die naam hebben gemaakt in de paleontologie; de meesten daarvan vaak pas na hun dood. Dat heeft natuurlijk veel te maken met de mores van de tijd en het niet beschikbaar zijn van internet en sociale media.<\/p>\n<p>Dat dit nu heel anders ligt, moge duidelijk zijn. Onze eigen Nederlandse \u2018paleo-Barbie\u2019, doctoraal studente Melanie During, is in rap tempo een BN\u2019er aan het worden, die in woord en beeld een lans breekt voor de paleontologie. Haar eerste boek** werd een paar weken geleden gepresenteerd, en afgelopen jaar verscheen in Nature*** het artikel over de tijd van het jaar op het noordelijk halfrond waarop de Chicxulub bolide zich de aardkorst inboorde en tot een wereldwijde ecologische ramp leidde. Beide publicaties mogen zich verheugen in een brede belangstelling, en dat niet alleen in academische kringen. Melanie doet haar verhaal, en doet dat uitstekend. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H17ge5BuW3M&amp;ab_channel=UniversiteitvanNederland\">Het filmpje over de kip en het ei<\/a> spreekt boekdelen.<\/p>\n<p>We mogen blij zijn met zo\u2019n promotor voor de paleontologie. Ik vraag me nu af wanneer de eerste \u2018Barbie\u2019 met roze haar en in paleontologenoutfit bij ons in de winkels ligt&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>John W.M.
